In daily work within and with management, core, and support processes, it is often challenging to determine the capability (or maturity) of these processes. Increasingly, clients are requesting the demonstration of this capability.
A process assessment has proven to be an effective method for determining this capability (as a status determination; “how good are our processes”). This approach enables the evaluation of process capability (or maturity) based on reference models and a detailed evaluation scheme, presented on a 6-level scale. The levels of this scale are precisely defined, with standardized criteria for achieving each level providing an objective foundation for evaluation. This methodology draws on well-known reference models from the IT industry, such as SPICE or CMMI.
The six levels of process capability (based on SPICE and documented in the ISO/IEC 33000 standard) encompass:
0. incomplete: “We work without following any instructions.”
1. performed: “We work; here are the products, but don't ask about the process.”
2. managed: “We can demonstrate that we are usually on schedule and that the product meets requirements.“
3. established: "We follow defined, tailored processes and collect metrics.“
4. predictable: "Here are our metrics (including history); they provide information about the quality of our work.“
5. innovating: "Here are our improvements and the corresponding metrics (perfectly aligned).“
